“Hermit Crab” Essays
Choose a “non-literary” format that you can use to write about a challenge (fears, anxieties, regrets, rejections, illnesses, injuries, heartbreaks, etc.) that you have faced in your life. Be as faithful as possible to the format, tone, and style of the original source material. The success of a hermit crab essay lies in the surprise of inhabiting something typically strictly informative with emotional and literary substance. Whether you want to be funny or poignant–or both!–the challenge here is to use the incongruity of form to create impact and meaning. The final version of this assignment should be 150-350 words.
HOW TO: Be a Human Person
Step 1: Be born. This is the hard part, and it’s completely out of your control, so just hope someone does this for you.
Step 2: Be a baby. This is just kind of annoying. You’ll look back on this part with embarrassment and maybe some laughter. You won’t remember any of this, but your parents and relatives surely will remind you of all the times they had to change your diapers.
Step 3: Gain consciousness. Again, out of your control, however- this is where things get hard again. All your decisions, good and bad, are your own from this point on, so you better be careful! (No really- things can get rough!) But I believe in you!
Step 4: Go to school. You might either love or hate this part. School doesn’t matter all that much- it just determines what you’ll do the rest of your life! So make sure you don’t screw it up.
Step 5: Make friends! Don’t treat them terribly, though. Or talk about them behind their backs. Just try to be a good person, okay? Oh wait- I haven’t told you how to do that. I’ll tell you about it later. Or maybe it’s something you need to figure out yourself? That’s what they tell me.
Step 6: Now, I know I just said that life is pretty hard, but this is harder than that. If you’ve made it this far, because throughout history a lot of people haven’t -believe me- now is the time to get something that will last the rest of your life. Try to find a relationship. Believe me, I’ve been there. The first one will most likely not work out. Or the second one, or the third one, on and on. But, if you’re lucky, you’ll find someone truly special. Don’t screw it up. Don’t try to look for something that isn’t there. Or if it’s there, don’t rush into it. Are you even sure it’s there? Oh- she’s walking this way. Be cool, don’t act too awkward. Oh no she’s walking towards you? Just don’t say anything that-
Step 7: What are you doing? You walked away? Great. Now she thinks you’re weird. Don’t look back! She wanted to talk to you about something. Okay she’s walking towards you again. Just allow the conversation to happen.
Step 8: That could have gone better, but it also could have gone worse. Just wait. Allow things to happen naturally. Who knows? Maybe she likes you too. Don’t ask her point blank though.
Step 9: What did I just say? You asked her “Do you like guys?” Are you kidding me? That was the opposite of what I told you to do. You’re hopeless, truly. I don’t even know why I’m helping you at this point. Do you remember what she said? No? You literally just asked the question. Well, you can’t ask again- just ask some of her friends if she likes you back.
Step 10: Okay so that friend said she did. Alright. Now here you go. Just ask her on a date. Don’t be weird about it. Just ask her out and for her number.
Step 11: She knew you were going to- but that’s okay- she said yes, at least. Now just don’t screw up.
Step 12: Alright, this is where I bid you farewell. I only know so much, and this is where my life experience ends. I’ll leave you with this- don’t overthink everything. If you want something, go for it. The worst they can say is no. Do what you want to do- don’t only do something because someone else wants you to.

J.G
J.G is the first and last studio album by the unpredictable Jeferson Gomez.
The album was being created on September 6, 2024, the day he started to reflect how far he has come ever since the day he attended at St. Patrick’s School and how his hometown changed his character from the most minimal events to the most important events that impacts his character as a whole. To read more about his album, scroll down.
Birth 0:05
Lost 4:09
The Refusal of the New 5:10
Childhood Ending 13:17
Develop 16:20
New Place 17:22
Rise to 18:23
end 19:24
1. “Birth”
The song “Birth” is a bundle of random audio clips of flashbacks of what Jeferson saw and heard as a child. In the audio clips, the game “007 Legends” blares on the speakers while controllers click and children giggle, and then the audio switches to the sound of waves for 2 seconds.
2. “Lost”
This song touches on how Jeferson would avoid school because it scared him that no one in the school understood him. He feared not making friends since there was a language barrier with almost everyone he would try to interact with. The feeling of being lost in a place where no one could understand him inspires the song title “Lost”.
3. “The Refusal of the New”
Jeferson highlights parts of his childhood, such as being able to smell the beach because it was so close to home, the roads being smooth, and no traffic ever occurring, being able to breathe fresh air, and then transitions to what he sees and feels on the road while moving into Boston, such as the road feeling rougher, the sounds of horns being blared constantly, and the moods of people changing as he gets closer to his new home.
4. “Childhood Ending”
In this interlude, Jeferson talks to his childhood friend, and they talk about how their elementary school closed because it didn’t have enough funding to keep it running. They bring up memories like drawing strawberries on the concrete with chalk.
5. “Develop”
Develop is the 5th song of J.G.’s album shifts the focus from Jeferson’s childhood to the present time during 2020. Jeferson writes about how he changed from being in class with his peers to online classes. He also writes about how relationships grew or died and how the pandemic made him mature and perceive things differently
6. “New Place”
New Place covers the aspects of identity that changes through Jeferson during his junior year of high school. He writes about how he is not a kid no more and he will never be that same kid again before junior year. He goes into detail about he has to worry about deciding how his future should be built and has to learn about the realities with entering the adult life.
7. “Rise to”
Rise to is the resolution of the album. In the short song, you can hear Jeferson and other peers laughing as they run on the sand and the waves crash. This song has its similarities as the same waves from the song “Birth” are being played. This song symbolizes of healing a childhood that once lived too short.
8. “End”
End is the last song of the album. All audio files in the album are played in non-chronological order, and the album ends with the sound of a DVD player ejecting a DVD and another DVD sliding in. These sound effects send a message saying that the cycle repeats over again in anything, such as college. Not wanting to go to somewhere you signed up to, character development, growth, and then completing the goal is a cycle that never stops.

Songs About Me – Playlist
Hall of Fame (feat. will.i.am)
Ty Jamerson – Songs About me
When I was younger, I was introduced to the sport of lacrosse. It has been my favorite sport pretty much my whole life, and I played it all through high school. I am on the club team for Stonehill and hope to have a great year. This song reminds me of a hype song that I used to play to get me in the zone whenever I had a game.
Music (Erik Sermon & Marvin Gaye)
Ty Jamerson – Songs About me
Music has always been a big interest of mine. Not singing or performing, but just appreciating the lyrics, beats, and creations of all the artists. I love all types of music and I appreciate my parents showing me the music that they grew up with because it just makes me appreciate it more. This song reminds me that music is one of the staples in life that brings together all races by a united and similar hobby. It also reminds me of fun party’s and mornings full of energy singing along to Bruno Mars.
Change
Ty Jamerson – Songs About me
My parents got divorced when I was around 10 or 11 years old. This was one of the hardest changes in my life. My schedule had to undergo a major change due to parents arguing about watching over me, and I had to get used to going back and forth between 2 houses. This really affected my school work and my performance on tests. This song reminds me of the massive change that I had to undergo in my life and that change is a good thing.
This is me
Ty Jamerson – Songs About me
Throughout all of middle school, it was probably my hardest school years. I had trouble socializing and this affected my speech and my confidence. Over the past couple years, I have been working on bettering myself and gaining confidence. This song reminds me that it is okay to be who I am and I should always be proud of who I turn out to be.
See You Again (feat. Charlie Puth)
Ty Jamerson – Songs About me
A couple of years ago, I think 7 to be exact, I lost both of my grandparents on my dads side. They lived in Florida, and I barely saw them throughout the years, but even then, it still feels like a part of me is missing. This song reminds me of any close relative that I have lost or any important friendship that ended in my life.
Home (Phillip Phillips)
Ty Jamerson – Songs About me
Even though I have two separate homes, and two different families, I will always have a home no matter where I go. Home will always be where the people are and where the good times are created. This song reminds me of my parents and how much love and support they give me.
Breakeven
Ty Jamerson – Songs About me
Not all relationships end with a happy ending, and neither did mine. I have had some hard times in my life with relationships and some that I had to step away from. This song reminds me that my mental health is the most important thing, and even though hearts don’t break even, I need to make the decisions that are best for me.
Cry for Help
Ty Jamerson – Songs About me
I became best friends with a kid in my seventh grade English class, and we have had an unbreakable bond ever since. A couple years hanging out he finally opened up to me about his serious struggles and dark times. He has attempted suicide, but I’d like to think that he made it out of that hole with some of the help that I provided him. This song reminds me of my best friend Cody and all of the dark times that we experienced together.
Keep Your Head up
Ty Jamerson – Songs About me
Over the years of my life, many bumps have appeared on my path. Distractions, obstacles, setbacks have been a part of this path. Even with everything, I have always tried to keep a positive mindset and think about the good. This song reminds me that having a positive attitude is crucial and that everything will be okay in the end.

Directions: Answer the question in one paragraph or more, and make sure to be clear with your writing. You may begin when procted to do so.
Explain how injuries affected your mental state:
Injuries made me dread the sport I loved the most, it made me question if I even wanted to keep playing. I would constantly question if it was worth it to play through the injuries when after the game I would be in agonizing pain, and all so I can enjoy the feeling of playing with my teammates and play the sport I loved. It was a heavy burden and it showed, late at night in agonizing pain and limping to class, was it really worth it? To me yes, but to many that struggle of injuries can take a toll on your mental state. It can drive you to lead a different perspective on something you really enjoy. It can take all the fun out of anything you do and can really impact your future. That is how injuries affected my mental state.

A letter to future Savannah,
As I am facing senior year and all its ups and downs head first, I reflect back on all the adversity I have faced in the past. Going to college was always up in the air for me because I struggled academically, after committing to college as a first-gen I was naive to the academic struggles ahead of me. From being on borderline academic probation freshman year to making dean’s list junior year it’s safe to say I overcame many mental challenges. I have pushed myself enough to become the president of Anchors Leadership Society as well taking into consideration the self-doubt and pity that had to be worked through along the way. I write this because I can feel the anxiety of post-grad unknowns approaching and I would like to remind my future self that there isn’t anything you can’t accomplish with the right mindset and support. One of my first Chris Stapleton lyrics is, “You and I, we’re gamblers sorting cards that we can’t see”. The idea that everyday we get to restart and we never truly know what cards are going to get dealt is so beautiful to me. So when life feels heavy and the anxiety is high I hope this letter reminds you to step back for a moment and reflect on all that you have accomplished and remember that you have the chance to restart everyday.
Best,
Present Savannah
Format: A letter to future self
Dear future Ellie,
I am a freshman in college right now and are playing lacrosse. It is a big challenge that is facing me with a whole new set of challenges that I have never experienced before. It was hard for me in the beginning to be away from my family and where I grew up, but as the first week past so did those emotions and I became really busy with school, friends, and lacrosse. I write this because I can feel the sense of anxiety going into a bunch of new things and not knowing what to expect in the end. I would like to remind my future self that I am good enough, and that I can conquer anything I put my mind too. I know sometimes I get caught up and think badly about myself, but I need to know that I am just being pushed to become my best self. When life feels hard or like you want to give up everything, keep pushing because there will be a good outcome.

Playbook of concussion injuries
Play one
It’s the first game of the year and you’re up against some of the finest athletes in the 4th grade. This play will go down in history! Or so you think… Take the inside route in the blink of an eye. Run like hell, till you cannot feel your legs beneath you. Glide past the defense with no conscience of the end line. But don’t forget someone has the same goal. With one wrong step, everything will go dark. And there you will lie in regret, because you did not scheme the defense. Your head spins over and over because you made such a selfish and stupid mistake.
Play two
As an offense of coordinator, our job is to learn from our mistakes and make strides towards improvement. Now it’s a new season, a fresh start. It’s a beautiful day to play the game. The anticipation of today is coursing through my veins. The heart races in excitement for this new match up. We line up against who some think is a fraud… (unfinished)

Report card
Student name: Lilah Shallcross
Grade: 13
School year: 2023-2024
Subject : time management
Grade: C-
Comments: Lilah faced many challenges with time management. She was often on TikTok and Instagram when she would be doing homework. She found it hard to juggle school, sports, and her social life. She is trying to work on organizing her schedule better by scheduling a huge block for her “Lilah time,” where she spends bedtime watching movies and on TikTok and Instagram.
Subject: spending time with marley
Grade: B
Comments: Marley ( her puppy ) says he would grade Lilah higher if she lived at home, although he appreciates her face at least four times daily. He says he misses his hugs and ball throwing, although he understands her circumstances and can’t wait to see her soon.
Subject: independence
Grade: A+
Comments: because Lilah moved 14 hours away from her home, I’d say she has grown to be very independent throughout the last few weeks. She has done a great job getting up early, going to tennis, doing her laundry, and working on her!
Subject: social media
Grade: C-
Comments: Lilah hasn’t been doing an excellent job keeping in touch with her friends back home. She has been more focused on making friends with her and her new life here. She also hasn’t posted like she made a promise to herself to do.
Subject: overall happiness
Grade: A+
Comments: Lilah has been pleased, maybe the happiest she has ever been. She had thought moving away from her family could make her sad, but the distance had been outstanding. She loves her tennis team, her new friends, and her school. She got rid of all of her fake friends and didn’t have to be around the toxic relationship of high school anymore, which had weighed her down for years.

Dear Jack,
I am sorry to tell you that you have failed your 7th grade scoliosis test. If you would
like to heal your scoliosis, you will need to sleep in a back brace every night to be able to
push the curve in your spine back in place. We hope that you follow this step and that it
leads to a good recovery.
Best Wishes,

Dear Jack,
Congratulations on working hard to overcome all of these challenges you have faced
in your life. These past few years you have put in a lot of hard work. You have had a better
work ethic, both with running and in the classroom. You had a great first year at Stonehill
and are working hard to find your next opportunity in life. You also did everything you were
supposed to do to heal your scoliosis. Now you are experiencing less pain and have gone
back to sleeping without a back brace every night. We are so proud of everything you have
done to make yourself a better person. We hope you continue to work hard and be a smart
and kind man throughout your life.
